Blackout! And just when the nurse was about to put drops in my eyes! What had been a small, well-lit room was now a completely black area with no defining characteristics. I couldn’t see the nurse and she couldn’t see my eyes. So, it was back to the waiting room.
While sitting here, I recalled how, as a small child growing up in Sydney during the war years (World War II, that is!) we experienced many ‘blackouts’. The sudden darkness was scary, but when the light came back on, it made me happy again. And, as Sunday school children, we would often sing a little song, “Jesus bids us shine…” I did not like the third line, but if you do not know it, please ask me.
Now, over the many years since becoming a Christian as a teenager, and being blessed with many fine Bible teachers and mentors, I have been constantly and lovingly reminded by Jesus in His own words that, yes, darkness does still exist throughout the world and Satan continues to work evil in the heart of man. However, Jesus knows the end from the beginning and that the victory belongs to the “Light of the World”. May I share a few of Jesus’ words which I have treasured over many years, particularly during the ‘dark times’:
1.”I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.” (John 14:6)
What assurance to know that to follow Jesus’ words is to follow the One who ‘walked the way ‘himself.
2. “Narrow is the way that leads to life” (Matthew 7:14)
Be very careful. Satan is waiting for an opportunity to divert your attention and lead you on another path.
3. “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
What a wonderful promise. Follow Jesus closely and be bathed in the light of his presence so that you will not lose your way in the darkness.
4. “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
What a wonderful gift from God to guide us as we journey along the Way. What a great assurance to help dispel the darkness of doubt, and the treachery of Satan’s lies.
5. “You are the light of the world…Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14, 16)
We have the responsibility as followers of Jesus to show the ‘light’ that now fills our lives, so that others will move out of darkness, drawn to that light we reflect and thus bring glory and praise to God.
So, does the message within this last quote from Matthew sound a little familiar? It is akin to our St Michael’s Church family’s Vision Statement: “To see more and more disciples of Jesus shining as lights in the city of Wollongong.”
The more lights, the less darkness. So with the Lord’s help, let us faithfully use the skills he has given us and the wisdom and guidance of His Word to see our city become a City of Light.
God bless you,
