Mission Update – Regional Indigenous Ministries

In October, Mission of the Month giving is devoted to our Anglican Regional Indigenous Ministries. Its two key ministries are up in the Macarthur and down around Nowra.

For reasons of entrenched indigenous disadvantage, it may be a long time before such ministries can be self-sustaining. There are big challenges, but positive signs. Regardless, I believe we owe a special debt of encouragement to those ministering to the first custodians of Australia, all the more so, given the poor treatment many Aboriginal people received at the hands of later arrivals. Here’s a bit of info about each church.

Macarthur Indigenous Church’s pastor is Michael Duckett. They have a Youth Gathering on Monday evenings in the St Peter’s grounds Campbelltown. They have an Aboriginal Men’s gathering on Wednesday mornings, a prayer meeting at lunchtime and ‘Bible yarning time”, Wednesday evenings. On Sunday their church meets at 10am at St Peter’s.

Shoalhaven Aboriginal Community Church (ShACC) is coordinated by Phil Miles. ShACC has a Sunday morning church meeting, am informal Sunday afternoon home church meeting for those who can’t get to church in the morning because of work. As well as our Sunday meetings, they continue with a Men’s Bible Study and Phil Miles meets with a couple of the guys during the week. A number of regular members continue in poor health or in hospital, so numbers have been down, and sadly, this month a member passed away (after 17 year’s dialysis as a result of diabetes).

Parish Council Update – September
  • As always, we start with a member’s Bible reading (2 Cor 4:16-18) and prayer.
  • We approved a welcome sign for our grounds in multiple languages! We also approved purchase of a second blower for the jumping castle, which has now paid for itself through moderate cost rental to other local ministry groups.
  • We are currently reviewing IT usage and needs on our site.
  • We are also moving into our 2018 budget preparation phase, and considering staffing options for next year.
  • We discussed reports on the No Case marriage lecture, the church conference, the Bible reading challenge and the Anxiety seminar and leaders training, Sandy’s involvement at General Synod, and the recent Staff Planning Conference.
  • One decision from the latter is to re-launch our (fairly poorly attended) Parish Prayer Meetings. Our pastoral staff proposed four priority Prayer Days for 2018; first Wednesday of each term, with options at 7am, 10am, 5pm, and 7:30pm.
  • The financial report confirmed the improved trajectory of our finances and sufficient coverage for all liabilities. We also resolved to repay the remaining $25,000 on the parishioner loan ASAP, and thank that couple for their generosity.
  • We continue to encourage you to consider an annual Thanksgiving appeal for St Michael’s Day (traditionally 29 Sept). A reminder that projects include: ministry students, Bible Society, Scripture Union, Anglican Parish of St Clair youth minister, Salvation Army’s Illawarra Women’s Refuge; New Churches for New Communities, and Adjumani refugee camp appeal through Anglican Aid.
