Imaginez vivre dans un pays où vous ne pouviez pas comprendre la langue. Même les tâches quotidiennes deviendraient une vraie corvée.

If you didn’t understand the first two sentences, chances are you don’t speak French!

Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a place where you don’t understand the language? Even ordinary tasks like reading a news article, making an appointment or ordering takeaway would be a real chore!

Imagine living in Australia and not being able to communicate with people, often feeling socially isolated. This is a daily reality for many international students, workers and migrants who come to our weekly English classes at St Michael’s.

As a vibrant coastal city only a stone’s throw from Sydney, over 1100 people are moving into Wollongong every week (compared to 1500 in Melbourne!). We’re witnessing an unprecedented era of growth, especially in the number of non-English speakers; many of whom may never be invited into an Australian home.

Considering our central position as the ‘Church on the hill’ whose mission is “To know Christ, and to make Him known”, there is so much potential—and right at our front door.

English classes at St Michael’s

At St Michael’s EFL (English for Life) classes on Tuesdays, we’re blessed with the opportunity to change people’s lives by teaching them English. But even more importantly, we’re blessed to be able to share the good news of Jesus, often with people who have never heard about him before. Talk about an amazing way to change someone’s life and future!

A regular Tuesday morning at EFL involves an hour of English lessons, followed by a delicious morning tea, and later another 30 minutes of class time—often a reading comprehension passage using a Bible story. On any given Tuesday, you’ll meet people from all corners of the globe: Asia, Europe, Africa, South America; people searching for love and acceptance, just like us.

In Matthew 28, Jesus commands us to go and make disciples of all nations. He also encourages us to welcome strangers: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

People of all nations are coming to St Michael’s every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm (and Sunday at 11am!). How will you serve the King during the time he has placed you in Wollongong?

Choose your own adventure:
  1. Pray regularly for the EFL ministry at St Michael’s.
  2. Visit or volunteer as a teacher’s assistant at EFL. It’s as easy as simply coming along and being a friendly face.*
  3. Visit our 11am Easy English Church and consider joining this congregation for even more opportunities to share God’s love with people from all nations.
  4. Invite foreigners to EFL, 11am church, or even to share a meal in your home!
